How To Start A Blog For Beginners

As my regular readers know, I provide ideas for obtaining side income as a creative and even starting home businesses. Lately, I’ve been receiving a lot of messages about how I started my blog, so I decided to create a basic how to start a blog post. I hope you find my tips helpful.

I see that you’ve decided to start a blog. Great! Now let’s get down to business. If you haven’t decided on the niche of your blog, then this will be your first and most important step. 
You may be asking, “What is a niche?” Well, a niche is what subject your blog will focus on.

Once you’ve decided on your blog niche then you’ll want to brainstorm and choose a name for your blog. Choosing a name for your blog isn’t always an easy process, so you’ll want to set aside some time and create a list of possible blog names. Remember, whichever name you choose for your blog should reflect you and your blog. So don’t just pick a name because you’re in a hurry. If you find yourself getting frustrated, take a breath and try again in an hour or even the next day.

Now that you’ve chosen a name for your blog it’s time to register your domain name. The main things to check for when choosing a domain registrar include security, renewal rates, customer support, and ease of account management. I recommend using Namecheap  as your domain registrar. I’ve been using them for several years and have had all positive experiences. 

Next, you need to find a reputable web hosting company like BlueHost. Once you found the perfect web hosting company be sure that the company scores high in the following areas: security, pricing, disk space, and uptime rates. Remember, when you sign-up for a web host make sure to use your domain name already purchased. In my experience, I wouldn’t recommend having your domain name and web hosting with the same company. 

*Please Note: It may take up to 1 or 2 business days for your website to be fully functional after signing up for hosting. It just depends on which host provider you choose, that’s why I recommend BlueHost to get started quicker.

Now that your blog is up and running, you have the task of picking the perfect template to represent your niche. When I first started I chose free templates as there were a vast amount of them available. Since you’re a beginner I would recommend you do the same because throughout your blogging journey you may decide to change up your template from time to time (no need to waste money).

Congratulations! You’ve completely set up your blog. Next, it’s time to point visitors to your blog. That’s where promoting comes into play. Three ways to increase your blog views:

1. Create pinnable images using Canva.
2. Share blog and post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.
3. Create a podcast where you talk about your blog post further and link it to the actual post in the description section.

Finally, if you’re serious about your blog then you want to monetize it. There are multiple avenues to consider when deciding to make money from your blog. This includes selling ad space on your blog, joining affiliate marketing programs, and writing sponsored posts just to name a few.

 

After getting my blog completely set up I initially went down the avenue of affiliate marketing. This method of monetizing your blog does take a lot of effort at first, but once you get the hang of things it becomes second nature.
